What I’m Reading: August Edition
It’s that time again – time for me to share what I’m reading this month. Actually, I didn’t read that much this month, or rather, I didn’t read that many books because I was busy preparing for school, which began this week. My goal is to jump into reading a bit more now that school has started. I do have two recommendations for you: a novel and a Bible Study (I completed the Bible Study this spring). Here you go and I hope you enjoy! Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry. Berry shines the spotlight on Hannah Coulter and her life in Kentucky, beginning around the end of the Great Depression. As…

Simplifying the Juggling Act
I have enjoyed my summer too much. Time with family and friends, time for creative projects (like this blog), time for reading and so on. I have enjoyed every bit of it, which may be why I’m dreading summer ending. I’ve been asked several times within the past few days if I’m ready for school to start next week. My reply: not really. It’s not that I’m not looking forward to starting class – I am. I have a new class this year and I’m looking forward to getting to know them and their families better this year. My hesitation stems from what this time of year represents. It’s the…

Driving Towards Perfection
I am an impatient driver. Most of my commutes tend to be full of snarky comments directed towards other drivers who are driving too slow, sitting too long at green lights, or cutting me off. Sadly, now my kids are picking up on my snark and making comments themselves (this is where I would insert an emoji of a woman smacking her head). Whenever I hear my words out of my kids’ mouths, I cringe. I then tell them they need to learn to be patient and loving towards the other driver and to not do what I do. I don’t like this part of me, particularly since I’m feeling…

My Spiritual Mentor
Last night, I attended a meeting discussing women in church leadership. One of the topics discussed by the panel was “Who was your spiritual mentor?” Of course, for me, my answer would have been my mom. She provided a beautiful example of living in Christ during my formative years. I remember sitting on my mom’s lap at the age of six, asking Jesus to come into my heart. She had tried to discuss Jesus with me a year or so earlier, but all I remember of that exchange is of me asking her where God came from and if He had a mom. Her answers only led to more questions…

Word Study: Abide
“Abide in Me, and I in you…” John 15:4 (ESV) I was 23 years old and searching for direction in my life. After having left college the year before, I knew I needed to return to school. Employed as a customer service representative at a bank, I was working in a job that didn’t fulfill my calling in life (there’s nothing wrong with working in customer service, so please don’t think I’m putting it down. I’m referring to my own personal life and calling). I needed to do something different. I started praying about what direction I needed to take in my life and searched after the LORD to see…

What I’m Listening To: July
I love listening to music. I also enjoy hearing recommendations from my friends as they share their favorites. It’s been an enriching experience. In this new series, I will post my recommendations for music. I hope you enjoy! I listen to all kinds of music. What I listen to depends upon my mood. Classical, rock, praise and worship, 80s, and so on. Let’s just say, I have over 5 GB of music on my iPhone alone. Here is a list of what I’ve been listening to lately: Good News by Rend Collective: I’ve been a fan of Rend Collective for a few years now. Their songs consist of original praise and…

What I’m Reading: July
I greatly enjoy reading. I also enjoy hearing recommendations from my friends as they share their favorites. It’s been an enriching experience. In this new series, I will post my recommendations for books. I hope you enjoy! I read these three books within the last year or two. Since this is my first post in this series, I wanted to share them with you because they have greatly impacted my life. Prayer by Timothy Keller: This book has greatly improved my prayer life. It gave me a new perspective as well as reminding me the purpose of prayer. I admit, I had to read the book in small chunks because I…

Take Delight
At the beginning of each year, I pray about a word to focus on throughout the year. Have you ever done this? This year, I have two (because I apparently need all the help I can get): wisdom and delight. Today, I will focus on delight. “Delight yourself in the LORD…” Psalm 37:4 (ESV) Ask either one of my kids and they will tell you how much I love sunsets. I enjoy them because they are different every night. When I watch the setting sun, I am reminded of how creative and artistic our Heavenly Father is. Some evenings, the sun sets in a brilliant blaze of oranges, yellows, reds…

Faith, Not Fear
I admit, it has taken me a few months to get this blog up and running. It’s not because it was too difficult (though I’m still learning the technical grammar), but because I had to overcome my fear. What fear? Well, first, my fear of not having anything of value to write. Who am I to think others would be interested in reading what I have to write. But then I look at things I’ve been through in my life – the good and the difficult – and realize someone may be going through the same thing or feel alone in their journey and need encouragement. I know I’m one…
